Karen Hanson Wins and Paula Smith Takes Third!

Team Rostello presented by Fiorucci/CyCor’s Karen Hanson won the Women 40+ category while team mate Sharon Leary took second in the Cat. 4 category at the Casey Auto Group Criterium on April 19 in Virginia Beach. While at the Twisted Tire MTB Race, team mate Paula Smith placed third in the Women Pro/Expert category.

From Karen:

The pollen was knee deep, but we had a pot of Vicks and an inhaler so we were set.

This womens Rostello team is our best yet. Simply because we work so well together that we almost never have to say a word… everyone knows their job, where they need to be, and wham, there they are.

It was a nice field full of cat 1 and 2 riders, 40+, seasoned cat 4’s and 2 juniors thrown in to make life interesting. The course was lightning fast since they ran it backwards. I could have easily shaved some weight off the bike and taken the brakes off! Besides a little squirliness, where my team mate Julie Smith got run off the road not once, but twice, the race was just flat ass fast the whole time.

With 9 laps to go, Rostello went to the front and never relinquished it. We knew that position was going to be the key to a good finish. With two laps to go, Julie went to the very front to organize the train and just demolished the rest of the field. Her lead out cost her in the 1-3 race, and she finished 5th, but launched me to the 40+ win and Sharon Leary to second in the Cat 4 category. Julie rocks the world. Best lead out in the business.

(By the way, we’re pooling the dough for an end of the year blow out- think Spa treatments and really good wine to make it up to our bodies for all the hard work all year!)

I heard that Gregg Gammon was 8th in the cat 4, and managed to escape 2 crashes. Gregg is rolling! Good job!”

From Paula:

I got 3rd place in Pro/Expert Women held at Poor Farm in Hanover County on April 19th. My team mate Christine Williamson got 4th in the beginner category. Frank, unfortunately, couldn’t race due to a back injury.”

The Morgantown Road Race

Inside the first kilometer of the 80K race, a rider named Jerry attacked. Fritz had said he was one to watch, but it was the first kilometer. The gap grew to 100m, then 150.

Two years ago, he was racing the Commonwealth Games road race when two riders attacked at the base of the first climb, in the opening miles of the race. A rider named Nelson countered, attempting to bridge. Should he follow? He was just as strong as Nelson. No. It was too soon. Surely a group of three could not last out front for the whole race. There were many riders with ambitions on the day. They would be picked up in the next 10 or 20 K, and they would be weaker for their effort. Wait. Be patient, he had thought. But the chase was disorganized, the trio was strong, and they did stay away. Nelson got third. Read the rest of this entry »
